Information about getting married in Svendborg
Even though you are not living in Denmark it is possible to get married in Svendborg. The fee for paperwork is 500 Dkr.

Birth certificates
Copies in the original language with an authorized translation into either Danish, German or English.

Certificate of marital status
From the city hall of the municipality where you are living. Including: Name, birthday and birthplace, marital status, address and nationality.
It must not be older than 4 months. The certificate of marital status must be submitted in the original language and in an authorized translated version, if not issued in Danish, English or German.

Legalize
By legalized is meant authentication of the signature and authority of the issuer of the certificate of marital status.
If the certificate of marital status is issued in countries outside the European Union (except USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) the following procedure must be followed - in the country, where the certificate is issued:

  1. The proper superior Ministry (usually the Ministry of Justice, in some countries the Ministry of Interior) must legalize the person who has issued the certificate of marital status.
  2. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs must then legalize the person of the Ministry of Justice/Ministry of the Interior) (mentioned under 1.) who has legalized the issuer the certificate of marital status.
  3. The local Danish Embassy or consulate must then legalize the person of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mentioned under 2.) who has legalized the person of the Ministry of Justice/Ministry of the Interior.

(If the certificate of marital status is issued in countries who are members of the Apostille Convention (www.hcch.net) it is enough to get a stamp from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

Please note that the stamps must be translated, if not issued in Danish, English or German.

If you are divorced or a widow/widower
To ensure that the divorce decree/death certificate to be approved is genuine it must be legalized in the same way as the certificate of the marital status.

Copy of your passport
These must have entry stamps, residence permit or Schengener-Visa pasted in. The originals must be brought along to Svendborg Kommune and presented to the official.

It is your responsibility to cross the border legally.

Wedding appointment
About two weeks after having sent the required papers you can contact us to make an appointment.You will not be scheduled for marriage before we have approved your papers and you have called us.

Witnesses
For the wedding you will need to provide two witnesses. If you are not able to provide them, we will provide them for you.

Staying in Svendborg
You have to appear in person with the original documents three days before the wedding. You can visit the website for information about hotels and facilities in the town:

On your wedding day you will have to appear at entrance B at the town hall.

Important
The bride, groom and witnesses must be able to understand Danish, German or English or bring along an interpreter.
